Bari is a beautiful old medieval town on the Adriatic coast of Italy which has become increasingly popular as a tourist destination in recent years. The area has something to offer to everyone, whether you are looking for beaches, countryside, history and culture, shopping or a vibrant nightlife.
Start your visit by exploring Old Bari with its maze of narrow streets and two main squares, Piazza Mercantile and Piazze Ferrarese. It is also possible to walk along the top of the remaining defensive walls, which give a good view across the city. The waterfront also provides an interesting stroll as the old town lies between two working harbours.
Frederick III’s Svevo Castle is open to the public and is also a gallery for temporary art exhibitions. Opera lovers will find that Bari has one of Italy’s grandest opera houses, The Petruzzelli Theatre. The newer centre of the city has plenty of good value Italian restaurants and the old town squares have bars where you can enjoy an al fresco drink or meal. There is a large shopping mall with both international and local shops, many focusing on high end fashion and good quality tailoring. If you wish to explore further afield you will find a landscape of cultivated fields and deep valleys dotted with the unique trulli homes, which have distinctive grey conical roofs. Water lovers will find safe beaches with white sand and clear waters.
Although the historic centre of the city is compact enough to explore comfortably on foot, there is an efficient and very cheap local bus service, ideal for exploring the wider area. There are various guided tours of Bari available, such as a four hour walking tour which takes in the castle, cathedral, the main squares and other historical buildings. The tourist office will have information about other tours, sights to visit and other activities.
Flights to Bari will land at Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport (BRI), which is located only 5 miles (8 km) from the town. You will find various options to make your way from the airport into town, one of which is the direct train link into the city centre. The airport is also on the route of several urban buses. There are taxis and hire cars available at the arrivals terminal.
