Located in upstate New York, Binghamton is set in exceptionally pleasant natural surroundings. Sitting at the confluence of two rivers, the Susquehanna and the Chenango, the surrounding hills and multitude of green spaces provide ample opportunity for taking scenic walks or bicycle rides. An increasingly popular method of taking in the lush natural landscape of Binghamton is by hot air balloon. These gentle but spectacular modes of transportation are a common sight in the skies above the city.
Within the city of Binghamton itself, there are plenty of attractions to keep visitors happy. The fifth oldest zoo in the United States, Ross Park Zoo continues to draw in the crowds and is home to a varied selection of animals, from grey wolves to golden lion tamarins. There is also an abundance of museums in Binghamton, from the Bundy Arts and Victorian Museum, which tells the story of the founders of IBM, to the Kopernik Observatory and Science Centre.
From a tourism point of view, Binghamton is probably most famous as being home to a substantial collection of antique carousels. In fact, the city is known as the Carousel Capital of America. Made by Herschell, these beautifully maintained carousels can be found at the many public parks scattered throughout the city.
Binghamton has an efficient bus service in operation, linking all of the major areas within the city. Taxis are plentiful here but most require you to telephone ahead for a pick-up.
The city is served by Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM), which is situated approximately 10 miles (16 km) from the city centre. As a regional airport there are no international flights which terminate here. However, there are regular connections to Philadelphia and Washington. There are a number of licensed taxis which operate at the airport, in addition to options for car rental. The bus service which connects the airport to Binghamton is infrequent and requires advanced booking.
