To enjoy the beaches and coastal lifestyle around Norfolk, travelling between May and September is a good idea as temperatures tend to stay at a glorious 27 degrees Celsius. Great annual festivities take place during the summer months too, such as the Norfolk Harborfest in June. During this four day event downtown Norfolk Waterfront transforms into a hub of excitement and activity for all ages to enjoy. Visitors can expect to see parades, fireworks, performances, water activities and much, much more.
However, peak season can bring large crowds and increased rates for flights to Norfolk and accommodation. The heat can also be a bit much, so why not consider booking a flight to Norfolk in April or October for warm weather and a more relaxed experience? For those only focused on sightseeing, a winter trip in December or January could be even cheaper. During this time holidaymakers can still enjoy visiting landmarks such as the city’s Second World War Memorial, the Hermitage Museum of Art and the Botanical Gardens. Norfolk is a great place to be in December for Christmas festivities such as the Holiday Yule Log Bonfire event which sees Town Point Park evolve into a magical winter wonderland. The event also features a huge Yule Log Bonfire, Christmas carol sing-a-longs, a visit from Santa and plenty of mulled wine, craft beer and hot chocolate on offer to keep you warm during this free and unique celebration. Keep in mind that although cheap flights to Norfolk will be easier to find during the winter months, airfares may experience an increase over the festive Christmas and New Year period.

When I was going to board, one of the staff members told me that I could not board with my passport bag because it was tree items and I would need to check a bag. This was so stupid ! The bag was small. So I had to put my things in my pockets, put the funny bag inside the other bag. Then go throw it. Then in the plane put everything back again in my funny bag.

Often thought of primarily as a Navy town, Norfolk, has been enjoying a renaissance in recent years, and is fast becoming one of the finest tourist destinations on America’s eastern seaboard.
One of the best features of Norfolk is its thriving downtown dining and cultural scene. There are restaurants serving every kind of cuisine, from Italian to Mexican (as well as delicious locally produced Virginia ham). Theatres and cinemas are also opening up all of the time. For others, the town offers a lively party atmosphere, with bars to suit all tastes. Check out the Ghent district for some of the best places to enjoy a relaxing drink after sightseeing.
And the sights are worth seeing. Visit the town’s memorial to the Second World War general Douglas MacArthur, head to the Hermitage Museum of Art or to the excellent Botanical Gardens which offers seasonal tours showcasing the flowers of the eastern coastal region.
Children are catered for by Norfolk’s well-run Zoological Gardens, while the whole family can enjoy an exceptional experience with a tall-ship cruise along the “Hampton Roads”. Visitors can explore the USS Wisconsin – one of the biggest battleships ever built, and they can learn even more about the sea at the brilliant Nauticus exhibition.
For others, the coast offers superb beaches and a chance to relax in the pleasant Virginia climate. Try your swing at a local golf course like Lambert’s Point or go hiking at the gorgeous Hoffler Creek Nature Preserve.
Norfolk is also conveniently situated to reach the attractions of Washington DC. Rent a car or take a bus to see the Capitol, the White House and Lincoln Memorial before heading back to your hotel room the same day. It is even possible to reach Richmond and Philadelphia in a few hours.
Getting around Norfolk itself can be done by bicycle, taxi, and bus or on foot – but getting to the beaches, golf courses, hiking trails and to cities like Washington DC really requires a car. For local transport, an excellent light rail network connects the town to coastal resorts.
Once your flight to Norfolk lands you will find many cab firms operating a service between Norfolk International Airport (ORF) and the city centre. Shuttle buses can offer a slightly cheaper alternative, but for many, a rental car from the airport is essential.
