Temples, great restaurants, galleries, and parks combine to make Vadodara a relaxing and memorable place to visit. Culture lovers should make sure to pay a visit to the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery, which is a lovely place to see some of the region’s best works of art, as well as some exciting international pieces. The Laxmi Vilas Palace, which was built in 1889, has traditionally been the home of the Royal Family of Baroda, and in the present day it remains the official residence of the Maharajah of Baroda. The grounds of the Palace are also home to a wonderful golf club, which many golfers describe as the best in India. The Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum is another fascinating place to spend an hour or two, and will be very educational for families travelling with children. If you fancy a tranquil stroll or a scenic picnic with your travelling companions, then there can be few better places to visit than Sayaji Baug. Located not far from the town centre, this spacious and well-kept park is home to timid but friendly deer and other native species of flora and fauna.
The most traditional, and seemingly the most popular, way to get around in Vadodara is by rickshaw. You can hire these from almost anywhere in the town centre. Taxi, or motorcycle taxi, is another popular way to get around the city. Hiring a taxi cab rather than a motorcycle taxi is considerably safer. There are also plenty of special tour buses in Vadodara that will take you to key sights in the city. Hop on to a long distance coach to explore further afield in Gujurat, or take the train to continue your journey. Hiring a car is another option, though driving in this region of the world tends to be very hectic, with not much regard for traffic lights, so entrusting yourself to a local driver can be preferable.
Taxis and hire cars are both on hand to take you from Vadodara Airport (BDQ) (also known as Civil Airport Harni) to the centre of town. The journey takes around 25 minutes, and taxi drivers will often accept payment in a variety of currencies (especially dollars). Rickshaws are also available outside the airport, should you wish to arrive at your hotel in traditional style.
