Eritrea is good to visit all year round, though for many people the weather is a deciding factor. Asmara experiences a dry season, which lasts from December to April, and a wet season, which runs from May to September. Temperatures throughout the year are fairly constant, although the dry season tends to be slightly cooler.
The climate is at its best during the drier months, when temperatures are on average between 6 and 25 degrees Celsius. This is a more preferable time to visit the city, which results in increased prices for accommodation and flights to Asmara. Most visitors would prefer to avoid the wettest months, July and August, so this can be a good time to look for lower hotel rates and cheap flights to Asmara, if you’re travelling on a budget. The hottest months in the city are May and June, when temperatures can reach highs of 26 degrees Celsius. Why not visit at either Christmas time or during Eid to enjoy some festive celebrations?

A trip to the Museum of Asmara offers visitors a chance to learn about the intriguing history of the region. This small but fascinating museum is a great place to while away an hour, especially if you are interested in archaeology, as the museum is home to some amazing ancient scrolls and inscribed tombs, as well as several finds from archaeological digs around the city. Another point of interest is the Sembel Archaeological Site, where visitors come to see first-hand some of the ancient artefacts associated with the region. Travellers who take flights to Asmara in search of culture should also make a visit to the opera house or the theatre in the city centre.
One of the must-see attractions near the city is the Denkalya Desert. The terrain here has been described as Martian, and it is truly magical with its colour scheme of bright sulphurous yellows, bright whites, and earthy browns.
Asmara has an extensive, and organised public transport system. There are clearly marked bus stops where you can hop on a public bus or mini bus throughout the town centre, and these will take you to the key sights in Asmara. Taking a taxi is also an option, and remember that taxi prices in Asmara are much cheaper if you choose to take a shared taxi with other people rather than a contract taxi just for yourself. A shared taxi might take a little longer to take you to your destination, as it drops other people off first. Make sure to negotiate the price before departure.
Visitors who take flights to Asmara International Airport (ASM) will find the city centre located just 3.7 miles (6 km) away. There are regular buses from the airport to the centre: the journey takes half an hour. These buses leave every 30 minutes between early morning and late evening each day, and the fare is very reasonable. The other main option is to take a private taxi from those waiting outside the airport. A taxi will cost roughly ten times as much as the bus, but which will get you right to the door of your hotel within the town centre in just 20 minutes.
